What To Do After Your Hygiene Treatment

Congratulations! You got into the dentist’s office and you completed your appointment with the dental hygienist. This is a very important and necessary step to maintaining your oral hygiene. We are going to talk about what to expect after this appointment and steps to help maintain proper oral hygiene.

Take Your Hygienist’s Advice Seriously
Everybody has different needs when it comes to oral hygiene. This means that there isn’t a cookie-cutter response that works for everyone. There are a lot of factors that affect oral health like your genetics, your oral care regimen, and your diet. As your dental providers, we will talk to you about things that you could be doing very well and things that you could improve on to help prevent more serious dental problems. We are your personalized team looking at every aspect of your oral health to create a plan to help you be as healthy as you can be.

Sensitivity is Common
After your appointment, your teeth and gums may feel sensitive. This is common and nothing to worry about especially if you haven’t been to a hygienist appointment in a long time. For example, let’s say John hasn’t been to a hygienist for 3 years because he didn’t make time to go in college. Due to plaque build-up, we had to use a Waterpik to clean his teeth properly. We told John that his gums may be sensitive for a few days due to difficulty removing the access plaque.

This is a common scenario but it’s important to visit your hygienist as often as needed because we clean areas that you can’t clean yourself. We get deep into your gums to clean out the plaque that gets into the space between your gums and teeth. If you have a permanent retainer from braces they also clean the spots underneath the fixtures that you can’t reach with normal flossing and brushing at home. After a visit like this, your gums will feel sensitive and this is normal so don’t stress over it. Your dentist may also recommend a sensitive toothpaste and tell you to get a soft bristle toothbrush so your not brushing away your gums. Don’t be afraid to go eat after your appointment and enjoy that fresh, clean feeling, all day long.

Don’t Put Off Follow-Up Appointments
Depending on your oral health you may need to visit the dentist sooner than you would like to get some problems fixed. If you have cavities it’s important to get them taken care of as soon as possible so they don’t turn into more serious problems down the road. If your oral health has been poor over the last few years they may require you to visit more often. There are a lot of factors that we take to prevent serious dental issues like a loss in bone density and preventing periodontal disease. professional help to understand how to prevent these and your dentist will know the best course of action for you.

Even if you don’t have any cavities; it isn’t uncommon to need to schedule follow up appointments with your hygienist sooner than the average 6 months. Like we said before, everyone’s oral health is different based on several factors so do your best to not put off appointments that are recommended for you.

Keeping Up Your Oral Hygiene at Home
Your dental providers can only do so much for you when it comes to your oral health. It’s your responsibility to maintain your brushing and flossing schedule. As a general rule, you need to brush and floss at least twice a day. We may recommend flossing or brushing more often than that based on your genetics and dental history to maintain a healthy mouth. This could also help you save money in the long run so don’t forget to follow and additional advice that we give you after your appointment.

Taking care of your oral health can have a major impact on your overall health. It can help prevent sickness, infection, dental disease, and overall is easy to do with the help of our dental providers. Make sure that you follow the specific advice we provide for you after your appointment because again, everyone is different. It’s a team effort and we can only do so much. It’s your responsibility to make sure you are doing your part at home and do not put off dental appointments.

Give us a call at (801)747-8018 to schedule your next appointment. We look forward to taking care of all of  your future dental needs!

Use It Before You Lose It!

It is November, which means the end of the year is just around the corner! Do you know what else that means?

As the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, your dental benefits expire and start over again with the new year. Only about 2.8% of people with PPO dental plans reach or exceed their annual maximum. If you are on a flexible spending account, the deadline is the same for those benefits. Don’t let them go to waste, use them while there is still time this year!

To help you get the most of your benefits and maximize your coverage, here are some tips to consider!

Call your insurance carrier or employer for more information!

No one knows better what’s included in your plan than the people that wrote it for you. They can help discuss your options and tell you what coverage you have left for the year and how to get the most out of your policy.

Find a dentist you trust!

When looking for a provider, make sure you find one that accepts your insurance and can work with your needs and schedule. For a list of insurances that we take click here

Keep your account updated!

Insurance companies are not always up-to-date on your account and information. Making sure that your account is current allows no room for gaps in coverage and helps avoid waiting for your dental treatment!

Splitting Treatment

If you need extensive work, split the appointments and work between this year and the new year. Doing this allows you to use up your benefits from this year and have to pay less out of pocket next year. Make sure to discuss this option with your dentist and treatment coordinators to find the best breakdown of costs and treatment.

DON’T WAIT!

Every year your benefits will reset and expire. Knowing this will allow you to use your interests throughout the year and help you stay on top of your treatment and avoid losing out on your coverage.

With holiday breaks coming up, it’s a great time to get you and your family in for any end of the year treatment! Give us a call at (801)747-8018 to schedule your appointment. We look forward to seeing you at our clinic!

How Do Coffee and Tea Affect Your Teeth?

Hands_holding_coffee-Cup

The temperature is dropping, and getting out of a warm bed in the morning is getting harder and harder!

Sometimes the only thing that can get us up and going in the morning is a big cup of coffee or tea. While that can be a great jump-start to our day, coffee and tea often have negative effects on our teeth and oral health.

We have heard and we know that dark drinks stain your teeth over time.

According to colgate.com, “although the enamel of your teeth is the hardest substance in the human body, it is not flat and smooth. On the contrary, your tooth enamel contains microscopic pits and ridges that can hold particles of food and drink.

Pigments from dark-colored drinks such as coffee, tea, and soda can become embedded in those cracks and ridges and, if the proper steps are not taken, can cause permanent, yellowing stains on your teeth.”

Beyond the staining are there other effects of coffee and tea on our teeth?

Coffee and tea have acids, tannins and chromogens that are harmful to your teeth in more ways than one. The tannins and chromogens are the enzymes that stain your teeth. The acid breaks down the tooth enamel and weakens your tooth and makes it more susceptible to staining and other damages.

The caffeine that is in coffee and most teas also dries out your mouth and can lead to dehydration.  Dry mouth also contributes to tooth decay and even gum disease.

Coffee and tea are great in moderation and are still great ways to wake yourself up, or give you a mid-day pick me up.  Herbal teas are a great alternative that have no caffeine and often contain less acids and tannins. Green tea has often been known to boost your dental health, while still giving you that hot drink for the morning!

Still have questions about the effects of coffee and tea? Give us a call at (801)747-8018 to schedule an appointment with one of our dentists to sit down and talk about your teeth and set up a treatment plan for a brighter, stronger smile!
