Tongue Cleaning: Is it something we need to do?

We focus so much on our teeth and making sure those are in tip-top shape, that often our tongues get overlooked. But is cleaning our tongue something that needs to be done?

Think about it, just like our teeth, everything that we eat and drink comes in contact with our tongue.

According to healthline.com John D. Kling, DDS, said: “Bacteria will accumulate greatly in the areas of the tongue between the taste buds and other tongue structures.”

Those areas on our tongues are mating grounds for bacteria! If we don’t take care of that it can lead to bad breath, higher bacteria growth, plaque build-up, potential loss of senses, and not taking care of our tongue can even end up damaging our teeth!

Of course, many of these things take a long time to develop and are worse case scenarios, but we still need to be aware! So while that might have been a tad dramatic, knowing these things help motivate us to establish a habit of good oral hygiene that includes scrubbing/brushing your tongue.

Now that we know that cleaning our tongue is necessary for our daily routine, we can dive into the question you are all asking; “How I do I clean my tongue?”

There are many ideas and suggestions out there, so we have gathered some of the more common ways to help you better take care of your mouth.

Brushing: Every morning and night when you are brushing your teeth take a few extra seconds and run those bristles across your tongue. Make sure you are cleaning all around, but still being careful! Our tongues are sensitive and have a layer of skin on them, so when brushing, you need to make sure you aren’t causing damage.

Tooth scraper: Much like a toothbrush, you can purchase a tooth scraper at your local drug/grocery store. Add this to your daily toothbrushing, and it will assist in the fight against bacteria and bad breath!

Mouthwash: Mouthwash is also an excellent cleaning method that can be effective when paired with brushing your teeth. Most mouthwashes have ingredients that target the bacteria in your mouth and on your tongue and leave your mouth feeling nice and fresh!

As we all get older, maintaining proper care of our teeth can seem like a daunting task. New App Makes Brushing Fun!

Brushing our teeth twice a day for 2 minutes takes a very small portion of our time, but even just 2 minutes can feel like an eternity to a child. That is why fun products like the FREE tooth brushing app from Oral B are so much fun!

The new Disney Magic Timer app features your child’s favorite Disney characters as part of an interactive stopwatch. This app (available on Iphone and Android) is cleverly designed to promote a healthy mouth with programmable reminders and an interactive sticker chart. The timer itself allows you to scan Disney and Marvel themed characters on your tooth brush or tooth paste to create scenes that your child can earn every time they brush their teeth. These fun rewards are collected as part of an album that can be viewed and shared with others to incentive brushing twice a day per dentist recommended guidelines.

The interactive timer is an excellent way to emphasize good brushing habits that build a healthy smile. Make Flossing Fun!

Oral health is one of the most important things that we can teach our children and it can be so much fun! Young kids love to learn about everything that is going on around them.  Learning about their teeth with sensory activities can make future trips to the dentist more enjoyable for parents. Here is a fun project that you can do with your children to help them understand the importance of flossing.

Things you will need –

  • An egg carton or building block piece
  • A soft bristle hair brush
  • Yarn to act as dental floss
  • Play-doh or tissue paper

The first thing you will need a large building block piece or an egg carton to act as your teeth. Show your child how the teeth feel and compare them to the ones in their own mouth. You can then prepare the teeth for the experiment. Take your egg carton or building block and stuff bits of play-doh or tissue paper sporadically through the teeth. These act as bits of food that your child will need to try to remove by brushing the teeth with their pretend toothbrush (hairbrush) that you have given them to use.

After a couple minutes of brushing ask them if they were able to get all of the food out from between the teeth. Hopefully the answer is no so that you can teach them the importance of not only brushing their teeth but how flossing between teeth helps maintain a healthy smile. Give them the piece of yarn and show them how to make soft strokes between the pretend teeth. Carefully remove the bits of tissue paper or play-doh, being mindful to explain that the gums holding their teeth are delicate.
